To Yoga or not to Yoga? (…………………………… By Val (This came out in The Bay News last month)

Two things I hear often from people who have never done yoga are: I can’t do yoga because I am not flexible enough. Yoga is not for me because I have such-and-such disability or health issue. First of all, I wasn’t flexible either when I started yoga, neither are the majority of other people who join yoga classes every day. You do yoga so YOU DO become flexible.

Second, yoga is for absolutely every body! It is a system that can be tailored to absolutely every situation and absolutely every condition can improve with the practice of yoga. I say this because I’ve worked with people in wheel chairs, people with physically debilitating injuries, serious mental issues like brain trauma, seizures, etc, people with degenerative disease like MS, Fibromyalgia, etc. I’ve worked with people who are really overweight, people with addictions, people dealing with loss, pre or post menopausal women, people with cancer, or recovering from cancer, people with hip or knee replacements, people with degenerative conditions of the spine, people of all sorts, all conditions, and all kinds of issues. One thing always happens – they feel better, get better, and love the practice – as long as they stick to it.

The question you need to ask your self is – can you afford not to do yoga? Every year 1.2 mil Americans have a heart attack. Most of it is contributed to lack of physical activity, stress and of course – diet. Physical activity affects the function of the heart muscle, blood vessels, boosts HDL (good cholesterol), lowers blood pressure, reduces the risk of blood clots. These are the same reasons why physical activity prevents stroke as well.

One thing that seems to deteriorate quickest with inactivity is insulin sensitivity. It is also the thing that responds the quickest when you are active, according to Ben Hurley, a professor of kinesiology at the University of Maryland. In a study of more than 50,000 people, every 2 hours a day of watching TV was linked to a 14% increase in the risk of diabetes. Every 2 hours of sitting at work was linked to 7% increase. Evidence is clear now that people of both genders who are physically active have a 30 – 40% lower risk of colon cancer, about a 20% lower risk of breast cancer and studies are being done on other types of cancer. There are other issues too like loss of bone density, loss of muscle mass, mental health imbalance, weight gain, immune system function decrease, etc. All of which can be improved and in many cases reveres with physical exercise.

However, do you need to become an athlete in order to be healthy? The answer is absolutely NO! Walter Willett, chair of the nutrition department at the Harvard School of Public Health says that 30 – 60 min a day of moderate-intensity physical activity is all you need to make a huge difference.

Women in their 40’s and man in their 50’s loose muscle strength at the rate of about 12% per year because they lose muscle mass at the rate of about 5%- 8% per year. However, with only 2 months of resistance training, they can get an increase in strength by 40% reversing the effects of 2 decades of typical muscle loss and 3 decade of typical strength loss. Along with that comes more self confidence, better balance and less injuries.

Yoga is resistance training. When you take yoga strictly for its physiological benefits you can address practically every issue of the body. In recent studies, yoga has been found to lower blood pressure, reduce stress, increase strength, endurance, flexibility and agility. It has been found to improve circulation, digestion, metabolism, sleep and even sexual performance. It helps brain performance, focus, concentration and improves memory. It helps people lose weight and maintain it longer than any form of diet alone. Often yoga is prescribed to people as rehabilitation after injuries, accidents and for managing chronic aches and pain. Athletes cross train with yoga in order to improve performance. It is called the fountain of youth. It is really a treasure handed down to us from the sages of India. How can anyone not do yoga?!

It is in the nature of the practice to be truly adoptable to every body and useful for every body issue. People nursing injuries can adopt the practice to accommodate those injuries and to rehabilitate them. People dealing with weight issues can practice yoga to the level of their ability. Even disabled people can have a yoga practice specifically designed for them and their condition. No one is too old or too young, to fat or too skinny, to strong or too weak, too stiff or too flexible to do yoga. For majority of people, a regular group yoga class will suffice. For some people, private instruction will be the more appropriate way to go, or the only way available.  One way to start is to take an Introduction to Yoga course. We offer one every month. The next one is coming up July 9 – 4 classes in 4 weeks. It is important to start from the beginning, so that one understands the practice and their body.

Those who are looking for a work out can get it from yoga too. One can progress into the practice to infinite degrees. It offers a never ending growth potential. For seriously experienced practitioners we offer classes on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:00 pm.

Yoga is truly a practice that can be as gentle as a feather floating on a summer breeze, or as challenging as training for the Olympics, and everything in between. The key is to find your practice and then to stick to it so that you can see results. As you grow and change, so will your practice. The possibilities are endless. Are you ready?
